A recent investigation in The Telegraph brought crucial national attention to the severe risks faced by Southeast and East Asian women arriving in the UK through cross-border matchmaking and spousal visas—exposing how visa dependencies, coercive control, and modern slavery leave women isolated and trapped in abusive situations.
While our frontline caseworkers provide vital emergency support to individual survivors in crisis, SEEAWA’s mission extends to driving long-term structural change. True safety for our community cannot exist while immigration laws leave survivors vulnerable to losing their status when escaping harm.
Fighting for Legal Rights & Systemic Change
SEEAWA’s advocacy is focused on dismantling the systemic barriers that hold migrant survivors back:
- Securing the Right to Settle: We campaign for explicit, accessible routes to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for all migrant women who have experienced gender-based violence, domestic abuse, or modern slavery—ensuring survivors can build secure, independent lives free from the threat of deportation or status uncertainty.
- Ending Status-Based Exploitation: We advocate for expanding settlement and temporary support protections to cover all visa types, so perpetrators can no longer use immigration sponsorship or “No Recourse to Public Funds” as weapons of coercive control.
- Transforming Statutory Safeguarding: We work alongside local authorities, healthcare providers, and law enforcement to challenge harmful racial stereotypes and embed trauma-informed, culturally sensitive responses when migrant women seek help.
- Amplifying Grassroots Voices in Parliament: We bring the lived experiences of SEEA women straight to policy makers and parliamentary discussions, demanding legislative protections that treat survivors of abuse primarily as victims in need of safety, not as immigration cases to be regulated.
Systemic Change Starts with Our Community
Direct casework saves lives today; advocating for settlement rights and structural reform protects generations to come. By pairing frontline safeguarding with strategic advocacy, SEEAWA ensures our community’s experiences drive real, lasting change.
