In 2021, as gender-based violence spiked in the COVID lockdowns, a group of women came together to support the needs of migrant, refugee, and diaspora women from East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) communities in the UK. Initially coming together as Gabriela Safehaven, we later called ourselves the Southeast and East Asian Women’s Association (SEEAWA) to better reflect the diversity of our organisation and the scope of our aims.
SEEAWA is a pioneering organisation dedicated to empowering ESEA women in the UK to become advocates, leaders, and changemakers in their communities – whether that’s through tailored practical or financial support, providing safe housing and accommodation, or creating opportunities for growth through training or job opportunities. Ultimately, our mission is to equip ESEA women with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to navigate the issues that impact them and their communities.
Through our leadership training programs, we empower women to effectively spearhead campaigns, amplify voices, and advocate for policies that protect and promote their rights. We believe that understanding one’s rights is essential to claiming space in society, and we work to ensure ESEA women have the resources and confidence to do so.
To support systemic change, we also gather and share critical data, insights, and knowledge, advocating for policy reforms that address the unique challenges faced by ESEA women in the UK. Additionally, our community offers a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where ESEA women can connect, find solidarity, and collaborate toward a fair and just society.
Together, we’re building a brighter, more equitable future for ESEA women – one voice, one campaign, one change at a time.
